Ouma and Oupa Day: Celebrating Inheritance and History

21 August 2026 | Futuresmart Academy
There is something incredibly special about bringing generations together — especially when our learners get the opportunity to become the teachers.

On 21 August 2026, Futuresmart Academy welcomed the oupas and oumas of our learners to school for a very special Oupa and Ouma Day. Following an exciting and educational History Week, our learners had the opportunity to share what they had learnt with some of the most important people in their lives: their grandparents.

From History Week to Oupa and Ouma Day

During History Week at Futuresmart Academy, our learners explored the past and discovered fascinating stories, people, events and traditions. Through their History Week activities, they were encouraged to ask questions, investigate the past and develop a greater understanding of how history has shaped the world around us.
Oupa and Ouma Day provided the perfect opportunity for our learners to take everything they had learnt during the week and share it with their families.
But this time, they weren’t sitting in the learner’s chair.
Our learners became the teachers!
One of the highlights of Oupa and Ouma Day was seeing our learners proudly teach their grandparents about the topics they had explored during History Week. They shared their knowledge, explained what they had discovered and introduced their Oupas and Oumas to the fascinating pieces of history they had been learning about at school. For our learners, this was much more than simply presenting information. Teaching someone else requires learners to communicate clearly, organise their thoughts and demonstrate that they understand what they have learnt.
Having their grandparents as their audience made the experience even more meaningful.

There was a wonderful sense of pride as our learners shared their knowledge and their grandparents listened, encouraged them and celebrated their achievements.

Connecting Generations Through History

History is about more than dates and facts. History is about people, stories and experiences.
That is what made Oupa and Ouma Day such a meaningful extension of our History Week at Futuresmart Academy.
Our learners were learning about the past at school, while their grandparents represent generations of lived experiences and memories. Bringing the two together created a beautiful connection between the past, the present and the future.

While our learners were teaching their oupas and oumas about what they had learnt, the grandparents themselves became part of the learning experience simply by sharing their presence, encouragement and family connection. It was a wonderful reminder that learning does not only happen inside a classroom — it happens through conversations, relationships and shared experiences.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

At Futuresmart Academy, we believe that meaningful learning extends beyond textbooks and traditional classroom activities.
Experiential learning opportunities allow our learners to take what they have learnt in class and apply it in real-world situations. Oupa and Ouma Day was a wonderful example of this approach.
Our learners had to communicate their understanding of history to a real audience, while also developing confidence and strengthening their relationships with their families.
Most importantly, they were able to see that the knowledge they gain at school has value outside the classroom too.

A Special Day for Our Futuresmart Families

For our learners, Oupa and Ouma Day was an opportunity to proudly demonstrate what they had learnt. For our grandparents, it was a chance to step into their grandchildren’s school world and see their learning in action. For Futuresmart Academy, it was a privilege to welcome our extended school family onto campus and witness these wonderful moments of connection.
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the Oupas and Oumas who joined us on 21 August and made the day so special. Your presence gave our learners an audience to teach, an opportunity to share their knowledge and, most importantly, a special memory to treasure.
